OFFICIAL: Senator Edwin Sifuna Removed As ODM Secretary-General – ORPP

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been officially dismissed as Secretary-General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), following months of controversy regarding his departure from the party’s leadership.

In a letter to Sifuna, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) noted that the decision was made because Sifuna did not defend himself as required under the constitution.

According to ORPP, ODM followed all of the necessary procedures to remove the Nairobi senator from the prominent party position.

“After assessing the documents submitted by the party and the lack of your response in accordance with Article 47 of the Constitution, we have confirmed that your removal as the Secretary General of ODM is valid and followed the political parties’ laws,” read part of the letter signed by John Lorionokou, the Registrar of Political Parties.

According to Lorionokou, the ORPP has now made modifications to ODM leadership, thereby deleting Sifuna’s name from the party’s leadership roster.

The move comes two weeks after the ODM party officially removed the embattled senator from the position on June 22.

According to the party, the National Executive Council (NEC) considered a report from the Internal Disputes Resolution Committee (IDRC), which had been tasked with investigating a complaint against Senator Edwin Sifuna in his capacity as Secretary General.

After reviewing the committee’s findings, the NEC unanimously adopted its recommendations and endorsed Sifuna’s removal from office.

“After going through the report and the findings of the IDRS under Article 74, Section 2 of the party constitution, the NEC unanimously adopted the committee’s recommendation and endorsed the removal from office of Senator Edwin Watenya Sifuna,” acting Secretary General Catherine Omanyo said in an official statement.

“Effectively, Senator Sifuna ceases to be the Secretary General of the ODM party.”

Sifuna was first removed from the party position in February 2026 after the party accused him of going against party decisions, especially over the support of the broad-based government, despite being the spokesperson of the political outfit.

However, Sifuna challenged his removal to the political parties’ dispute tribunal, which later rejected his removal by ODM, stating that the party did not follow set rules before kicking him out.

The party therefore followed all the requirements, effectively kicking him out, and has now been confirmed by ORPP.

The developments come even as Sifuna and other individuals in the Linda Mwananchi team have announced that they will soon launch a political party ahead of the 2027 general election.

The group wants Sifuna to be a possible presidential candidate.
