DPP Reveals Fresh Details In Albert Ojwang’s Death In Police Custody, CCTV Deleted
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) informed the High Court that Albert Ojwang was tortured and died while in police custody.
He also stated that key CCTV footage from Nairobi Central Police Station had been removed in an attempt to conceal evidence.
During the commencement of the murder trial at Kibra High Court on Monday, DPP Renson Ingonga stated that investigations show Ojwang died as a result of a planned assault while in police custody.
This contradicts previous statements that he died after slamming his head against a wall.
According to the prosecution, Ojwang was assaulted with a blunt object before being strangled to death while detained at Nairobi Central Police Station.

Ingonga told the court that medical evidence will show Ojwang sustained blunt force head injuries, neck compression and multiple injuries across his body.
These findings, the prosecution says, are inconsistent with the initial police account of how he died.
The prosecution further told the court that CCTV footage from the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) office was deleted and the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) formatted before investigators could retrieve the recordings, in what it described as an attempt to conceal crucial evidence.
Prosecutors argued that the deleted footage was of significant interest because it could have helped establish what transpired while Ojwang was in police custody and who was present during the period leading to his death.
Further, the CCTV issue featured prominently during testimony by the prosecution’s first witness.
A technician told the court that he was called to Nairobi Central Police Station by his employer after officers from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) requested technical assistance.
According to reports, the technician testified that upon arriving at the OCS office, he found the DVR disconnected and not functioning.

He further told the court that the recording device had already been formatted, making it impossible to recover the footage investigators were seeking.
The prosecution maintains that the deletion of the CCTV footage formed part of efforts to interfere with evidence linked to the case.
Former Nairobi Central Police Station OCS Samson Taalam and five other suspects have been charged in connection with Ojwang’s death and have denied the charges.
The hearing continues before Justice Diana Kavedza, with prosecutors expected to call additional witnesses as they seek to prove that Ojwang was deliberately assaulted while in custody.
Additionally, that attempts were made to conceal evidence after his death.
Based on reports, the case has attracted significant public attention since Ojwang died in police custody.
The court proceedings are expected to determine both the circumstances of his death and the alleged efforts to interfere with key evidence.
