Kanini Kega, an East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament, has stated that his security detail has been withdrawn.

The legislator disclosed the situation in a quick statement on his social media sites on Monday, July 20, while also expressing concern for his own safety.

“My security has been withdrawn. But I have God,” Kega wrote.

The announcement came just days after Kega was allegedly attacked while driving home from Ol Kalou town during the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election campaign.

The incident happened on the night of July 13, as the lawmaker, a close associate of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was coming from a Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) campaign gathering for candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau.

According to Kega, he was trailed from Ol Kalou town before armed men caught up with his convoy at Kasuku Centre in the neighbouring Ol Jororok Constituency.

The EALA legislator and his driver reportedly abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot as the attackers closed in.

While in hiding, he claimed armed officers had pursued him and pointed guns at him and his driver during the chase.

“Kenyans, you can see I’m under attack. I’ve been chased by armed police officers,” the visibly shaken legislator said.

“They pointed guns at me. We were only able to escape. You can see I’m being hosted by these children. Ruto, you are not going to kill us unless you kill all of us.”

Kega was a former ally of President William Ruto before a fallout following Gachagua’s impeachment in 2024.

Although police have not yet explained the circumstances surrounding his security’s withdrawal, the move has been interpreted by some opposition leaders as an attempt to silence government critics.
