Blow To Ruto’s UDA As Governor Kang’ata Joins DCP

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has joined Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), just two months after announcing his resignation from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Kang’ata officially joined DCP after months of courting and dalliance with Gachagua, who had sworn he would not contest his seat on a UDA ticket.

“Welcome home, Governor Irungu Kang’ata, where you belong,” Gachagua said in a statement on Friday, July 24.

Kang’ata said in May that he would not defend his gubernatorial seat on a UDA ticket in the 2027 elections owing to strategic differences with the party.

He joined the Linda Mwananchi group earlier this month and has now decided on a party affiliation.

“Today at Wamunyoro Residence, I was pleased to receive my younger brother, Governor Irungu Kang’ata, Governor of Murang’a County, as a member of our party, DCP, the party of the moment and the future,” an elated Gachagua stated.

According to Gachagua, Kang’ata’s defection now means the party has a Governor, a Member of Parliament in Sammy Douglas Kamau and three Members of the County Assemblies.

After its win in the Ol Kalou by-election on July 16, DCP expressed confidence of scooping more seats nationwide.

Gachagua said that the party is determined to be the majority party in both Houses and the majority across County Assemblies.

Kang’ata has had ties to parties deemed supreme in the region since he was elected Kiharu MP in 2013 under The National Alliance (TNA).

In 2017, he hopped into Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party and won the Murang’a Senator seat.

With Kang’ata’s exit, UDA retains the majority of control in county offices, with eight governors if you consider Nakuru County as part of the wider Mt Kenya region.

Gachagua received Kang’ata at Wamunyoro alongside the party’s designated Secretary-General, Senator John Methu, and DCP National Organising Secretary Senator Mithika Linturi.

Others present included Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu; Kirinyaga Senator John Kinyua; Laikipia Senator John Kinyua; Kirinyaga Senator Kamau Murango; and Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa.
