NYAMIRA: Rescue Mission Turns Deadly As Pit Latrine Collapse Kills Four
Four persons were killed when a pit latrine under construction fell at Chinche Primary School in Borabu Constituency, Nyamira County, on Friday evening, July 24.
The dead were among the workmen engaged to build a toilet for a National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) project when the pit fell in.
According to witnesses, two men were trapped when the pit’s sides crumbled, and three rescuers who entered to help them were buried after the loose material caved in again.
Images widely distributed on the internet depicted the aftermath of the collapse, with neighbors gathered outside the school while police, emergency personnel, and volunteers attempted to rescue individuals trapped beneath the wreckage.

The graphic images showed some of the recovered victims with severe injuries, depicting the extent of the tragedy.
During the rescue operation, an excavator was deployed to remove soil from the collapsed pit.
Still, the residents allege that it accidentally struck some of the trapped victims, killing the people on the spot.
By the time of publication, the allegations surrounding the rescue operation had not been independently confirmed by the relevant authorities.

Following hours of rescue efforts, one person was pulled from the collapsed pit with critical injuries and rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.
Residents of Kiabonyoru Ward blamed the tragedy on what they described as poor planning and failure to heed earlier warnings about the site’s unstable soil.
According to locals, the school had been cautioned that the ground was too loose to support a deep pit latrine without proper engineering measures.
They argued that a qualified contractor should have been engaged to undertake the construction of the pit latrine instead of proceeding under unsafe conditions.
The incident has sparked questions over compliance with safety standards in the implementation of public construction projects, particularly those involving deep excavations in schools.
Police and county officials have since launched investigations to establish the cause of the collapse, whether proper safety procedures were followed, and the circumstances surrounding the rescue operation.
