Ruto Directs Formation Of Kenya Kwanza-ODM Coalition, Oburu Says Raila Would Do The Same
President William Ruto has announced that Kenya Kwanza and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have formally agreed to form a coalition to contest the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during the Broad-Based Government Principal Group media briefing on Monday, August 10, Ruto said the agreement followed consultations within the respective parties and political formations.
The president said the two political formations will also develop a joint manifesto outlining their agenda for the next election, formalising the partnership that has emerged under the broad-based government.
“After consultations and within our respective parties and formations, the Kenya Kwanza and Orange Democratic Movement have today formally resolved to develop a joint manifesto for the next election and constitute a coalition to contest the 2027 General Election,” Ruto said.
To see this move come to light, both sides of the coalition announce a joint team comprising representatives from each side to develop a manifesto in the form of a document that shall be presented before the people of Kenya.
ODM has nominated Isaac Waluke, Mariam Abdulahi Mbaruk, Leonida Kerubo Omosa, Kari Orege, and Benard Muok, an ex officio member.
Kenya Kwanza, on the other hand, has nominated Emmanuel Nzai, Dr Daniel Mwai, Bramwel Simiyu, and Dr Cecilia Ng’etich, with the UDA Executive Director Nicodemus Bore serving as an ex officio member.
President Ruto has reiterated that the joint technical team formed with ODM leader Dr. Oburu Oginga will not merely draft a political document.
Instead, the manifesto will draw on shared values and priorities between the two parties.
The document will also be shaped by aspirations Kenyans expressed through the national conversation on Kenya Beyond Vision 2030, and by the National Development Charter expected to emerge from that broader public dialogue.
“Their task is not simply to produce a political document,” stated President Ruto.
“The manifesto will draw from our shared values and priorities, while being informed by the aspirations, ideas, and priorities expressed by Kenyans, including through the national conversation on Kenya Beyond Vision 2030, and reflected in the National Development Charter that will emerge from it.”
The team’s mandate, Ruto said, is to identify common priorities, harmonize ideas requiring consensus, and craft practical policies addressing Kenyans’ economic, social, and governance aspirations ahead of the 2027 elections.

Separately, President Ruto and Oburu will each nominate five members to a second team tasked with drafting the coalition framework, governance structures, and leadership arrangements, work that President Ruto says begins immediately.
Oburu took the opportunity and reaffirmed that ODM party joined the Kenya Kwanza coalition not out of weakness but strength, insisting ODM remains Kenya’s largest party with structures reaching grassroots polling stations nationwide.
He recalled that the late Raila Odinga was ODM party leader when the broad-based arrangement began, calling his death unfortunate, and noted ODM’s policies on housing and universal health coverage align with Kenya Kwanza’s.
He defended the position of the two parties, stating that President Ruto welcomed ODM warmly for its numbers and quality, dismissing claims that the party would be swallowed.
“And President Ruto has also welcomed ODM with two hands because he knows that ODM not only brings numbers, but it brings quality,” Oburu stated.
“So I want to say that as we move on forward, those who thought that ODM was going to be swallowed, they should re-think.”
