“Baseless!” – DCI Responds To Gachagua’s Explosive Exposé, Reject Claims Of State Capture
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has hit back at Democracy for Citizens (DCP) party leader Rigathi Gachagua over explosive allegations linking the agency to enforced disappearances, police shootings and mysterious deaths in recent months.
DCI, in a scathing statement on the evening of Tuesday, August 11, dismissed Gachagua’s claims as “baseless”.
They also accused the former Deputy President of making explosive allegations against the agency to undermine public confidence in law enforcers.
“The DCI has taken note of a litany of baseless and unsubstantiated allegations by the former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, touching on the DCI,” the agency said.
Earlier in the day, Gachagua held a lengthy press conference where he slammed the government while specifically targeting security agencies over alleged involvement in abductions, extrajudicial killings and other serious crimes.
Gachagua alleged that Kenya was experiencing a breakdown of law and order and claimed that the DCI Director, Mohamed Amin, had been deployed to provide cover for alleged extrajudicial killings and abductions.
He also cited the deaths of Dr Victoria Mutiso and lawyer Matthew Kyalo Mbobu, alleging that police officers were linked to the two cases and accusing the DCI of covering up their alleged involvement.
However, in a rebuttal, the DCI reiterated that all Gachagua’s claims were unsubstantiated.
The agency added that allegations involving abductions, disappearances, deaths, police shootings and attacks on journalists are investigated where they fall within its mandate and are assessed on the basis of available evidence.
“The DCI categorically states that it does not sanction, facilitate, conceal, or participate in criminal conduct of any kind,” the agency said.
It also added that its mandate is to investigate serious and complex crimes, gather evidence and present cases to prosecutorial and judicial authorities.

DCI further rejected suggestions that its investigations are influenced by political affiliation.
They, instead, assured that no individual is above the law and that public prominence does not determine how a criminal investigation is conducted.
The statement went on, “The DCI therefore rejects any suggestion that its investigations are undertaken to serve partisan political interests.”
According to the DCI, investigative outcomes and subsequent decisions are guided by evidence and the law rather than political considerations.
The agency also criticised what it described as the use of deaths of public figures and private citizens to advance political narratives, arguing that such claims exploit grieving families for political gain.
Despite pressure from opposition, the Directorate reiterated it would also not disclose sensitive operational information on ongoing cases.
It added that suspects would be processed in accordance with the law where investigations establish criminal culpability.
