‘July Series Update!’ – KNEC Opens KCSE Repeat Exam Registration, Timetable

The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) retake, announced by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, will take place between July 1 and August 1 of this year.

According to a circular issued by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to all county directors of education, registration for the tests will begin on Monday, January 27 and end on February 21.

According to KNEC, registration for the exams will take place at county headquarters via the offices of County Directors of Education (CDEs) via the KNEC registration portal.

“Candidates wishing to register for the July series are therefore expected to present themselves at their respective county headquarters within the stipulated period to complete the registration process,” reads part of the circular signed by KNEC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Njengere.

KNEC has allowed repeat students to retake their KCSE exams to improve their results.

This applies to people who have previously taken the KCSE, including full repeaters taking seven or more topics and partial repeaters registering for less than seven.

It also applies to applicants who registered for the tests but were unable to take them owing to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.

Adult learners are also eligible, as long as they do not attend normal schools and can demonstrate verification of primary education qualifications.

“All repeaters and private candidates must register for the July series and not the November KCSE examination series,” warned KNEC.

First-time KCSE candidates in ordinary schools, as well as those who do not meet the requirements outlined in KNEC regulations, will be barred from taking the tests.

Candidates must present both the original and a copy of the necessary documents for registration.

This comprises a statutory ID, such as a national ID card, birth certificate, or passport; their KCPE examination certificate; a KCSE result slip or certificate for repeaters; and a digital copy of a passport photograph.

The tests will begin this month, with projects in art and design, agriculture, woodwork, metalwork, building construction, and computer studies administered between January and July 2025.

Theory and practical papers will be administered from July 1 to August 1, 2025.

“The theory and practical papers will be administered at County headquarters, while projects will be administered at the sub-county level in institutions to be identified by the respective SCDEs,” Njengere stated.

In terms of results, KNEC will provide KCSE certificates to candidates who repeat seven or more courses, while applicants who repeat fewer than seven subjects will receive a result slip for the subjects they have repeated.
