Police have initiated a manhunt for eight people who staged a daring escape from a prison in Wundanyi, Taiva Taveta County.

According to authorities, all eight suspects escaped after scaling and breaching the facility’s roof at Wundanyi Prison on Sunday, January 26.

The eight suspects have been identified as Patrick Karisa, Erickson Mwachofi, Samuel Onyango, Alex Makezi, Edward Maighasho, Robert Mchungwa, Mwangemi Mwanyange, and Joseph Kalama.

It is unclear how all eight suspects evaded guards at the site during the prison break.

The accused were arrested for a variety of crimes including theft, rape defilement, causing bodily damage, and burglary.

Civilians with information leading up to the arrests of the offenders were urged to contact authorities immediately.

Prior to the current breakout, Wundanyi jail had a decent reputation, with the last jailbreak event occurring in 2018 when a convict escaped and was apprehended three months later.

In recent years, the jail has implemented many initiatives to rehabilitate and prepare offenders for life after incarceration.

This was the latest horrific case of dangerous inmates escaping detention, coming only months after another sensational incident in a Nairobi police cell.

Coincidentally, the suspects arranged their escape by cutting through the station’s wire mesh roof, which investigators say was facilitated by insiders.

When officers made their customary visit to the cells to serve breakfast, they discovered that the detainees had vanished.

Eight officers have now been arrested for assisting the escape.
