Narc Kenya Formally Rebrands To People’s Liberation Party
The name change is part of Karua’s efforts to appeal to the younger generation of Gen Z, which is likely to influence the 2027 general election.
The legal paperwork was delivered to Karua on Friday at the ORPP’s Lion Place offices by the Registrar of Political Parties, Anne Nderitu.
Nderitu congratulated Narc Kenya for following due process in changing its name in compliance with Section 20 of the Political Parties Act of 2011.
“I urge the party to promote nationalism and uphold the realization of political rights,” Nderitu said.
The Registrar of Political Parties, @AnnNderitu,CBS, has today issued a change of name certificate to Hon. Martha Karua, chairperson of the People's Liberation Party (PLP), formerly known as @narckenya.

The name change is one of four key changes made by the party to improve its public appeal ahead of the 2027 elections.
In addition to the new name, Narc Kenya has updated its party emblem, official colors, and slogan.
The party’s original colors, bright red and white, have been replaced with lilac, white, and purple. Its symbol has shifted from a rose flower to a purple rose.
The new PLP slogans are “Unite” and “Liberate,” which replace the previous “One Kenya, One Nation, One People.”
This rebranding comes just days after Karua and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced their willingness to collaborate.
The two leaders have spoken favorably of Generation Z and encouraged them to register to vote.
Karua has remarked that the name change indicates a generational shift in party leadership, which aligns with young people’s goals.
Over the last year, the young have mounted a major rebellion against the Kenya Kwanza administration.
She also indicated that the PLP aims to introduce radical constitutional modifications, such as term restrictions for top party leadership.

“The party delegates have authorized us to amend our constitution,” Karua announced in November.
“We want to be the first party in Kenya to have term limits for our top leadership. This means that in the next party elections, I will not be eligible to contest.”
Karua reiterated her commitment to collaborating with Gachagua, who plans to start his own political party this month.
“I have led Narc Kenya, but we have rebranded. We will officially launch the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) next month,” Karua said on January 25.
“Don’t assume this process just started. We applied for the name change in May last year, but it is only now being finalized.”
This latest move deepens the competition for Gen Z voters, who are likely to be a major force in the 2027 elections.
According to the Kenya National Council for Population and Development, the 2019 census revealed that 75.1% of Kenya’s population is under the age of 35.
This corresponds to 35.7 million individuals, or three out of every four Kenyans, with many calling for political and economic emancipation.
As presidential candidates unite with younger voters, the contest for this critical voting group is expected to be exceedingly competitive as Kenya approaches 2027.

Narc-Kenya’s full name is the National Rainbow Coalition-Kenya.
The party was created in 2005, following the failure of the government-sponsored proposed constitution.
It was founded by National Rainbow Coalition members who supported the government and was later led by Mwai Kibaki.
Karua stood for president in 2013 on the Narc-Kenya ticket, the party she led after leaving Kibaki’s government in 2009.
