Moi University Council Sends VC On 8-Month Compulsory Leave

Moi University Council has placed Vice Chancellor Isaac Kosgey on a mandatory 8-month yearly leave beginning January 30 to enable the reform of the university’s management.

Speaking to the press on Saturday, February 1, council chairperson Noah Midamba disclosed that the decision was made during a meeting held on Thursday and Friday this week.

Midamba stated that the decision to award Kosgey an 8-month leave stemmed from an investigation that indicated that the Vice Chancellor had accrued a significant number of leave days since his accession to the top position.

According to the council chairperson, the Vice Chancellor’s continued accrual of leave days exposed the institution to audit inquiries.

“According to Section 28 of the Employment Act (2007), the Public Service Human Resource and Procedure Manual 2016, and Clause 10 of your employment contract provide for 45 working leave days per annum,” the council noted.

“However, it has come to the notice of the University Council that you have accumulated a substantial number of leave days equivalent to eight months.”

The statement continued: “The above notwithstanding, leave is necessary for rest and rejuvenation for an employee’s health and performance. Based on the above, the University Council has unanimously resolved in its meeting held today on January 30, 2025, that you proceed on 8-month leave.”

The council chairwoman also revealed that the two university Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Isaac Kimengi and Henry Kiriamiti, had been placed on one-year sabbatical leave.

Furthermore, the new council suspended the university’s top financial officer and legal officers pending the results of the ongoing investigations.
