COURT: Machakos University Student Who Killed 15-Year-Old Girl Sentenced To 25 Years

A fourth-year student at Machakos University has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for murdering a 15-year-old girl in Naivasha five years ago.

High Court Judge Grace Nzioka called the evidence against 22-year-old Fredrick Mwonjoria overwhelming, adding that his actions were motivated by malice.

Mwonjoria, a Nanyuki High School student at the time of the event, was charged with Valerian Njeri’s murder on November 28, 2019, in Mirera Estate, Naivasha.

The two were neighbours on the estate, which is home to many flower farm employees.

Mwonjoria, who was 17 years old at the time, allegedly stabbed the girl with a knife after luring her inside his home.

Njeri’s body was eventually discovered discarded outside the accused’s gate, with blood traces leading inside his room, where the murder weapon and bloodied clothing were found.

While sentencing Mwonjoria, the judge ruled that his conduct, despite the fact that he was a kid at the time, were barbaric and hence deserved a prison sentence.

She stated that based on similar examples, death or life sentences were not appropriate because the accused was a minor at the time of the incident, but a jail sentence was required.

Nzioka noted that she had examined the defense’s mitigation, which sought leniency because the accused was a kid at the time of the occurrence.

However, the fact that the accused buried the body under his bed and ate dinner with his family as if nothing had happened formed a disturbing picture.

Furthermore, the judge stated that there was malice involved because Mwonjoria stabbed the Form Two pupil 12 times.

He argued that the majority of her injuries were on her neck and forehead, indicating that the accused intended to kill the girl.

While delivering the punishment, Nzioka remarked that Mwonjoria might continue his study in jail, pointing out that many inmates have successfully improved their lives while incarcerated.

Following the verdict, the girl’s father, John Ndunu, stated that the five-year delay had a negative influence on his family’s emotional, spiritual, and economic health.
