SGR Records 282,000 Passenger Drop In 2024 – KNBS Report
According to the most recent Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) data, the number of passengers utilizing the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) decreased by 282,000 last year compared to 2023.
In 2024, 2,447,000 passengers utilized the SGR, a decrease from 2,729,000 the previous year.
KNBS did not clearly specify the reason for the 10.3% reduction.
However, the decline could have been caused by the 50% fare hike implemented at the beginning of the year.

In 2022, 2,392,000 people utilized the rail service. The 2024 record was also an improvement over 2021 when SGR gained 1,993,000 users.
The train service saw just 812,000 passengers in 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Conversely, commuter rail service revenues grew by 39.4 percent, from Ksh2.9 billion in 2023 to Ksh4.09 billion in 2024, as a result of the fare rise.
In terms of cargo transportation, both freight volume and freight income decreased last year.
The freight tonnage transported by SGR decreased from 6,533,000 tonnes in 2023 to 6,531,000 tonnes in 2024.
However, the 2024 statistics were higher than the goods hauled by train in 2022, which totaled 6,090,000 tonnes.
Figures for 2021 were lower, at 5,407,000 tonnes. The overall freight for 2020 was much lower: 4,418,000 tonnes.

This reduction in freight haulage led to a 4.8 per cent decrease in revenue, from Sh14.685 billion in 2023 to Sh13.974 billion in 2024.
Earlier this year, KNBS reported that SGR suffered a 50,780 passenger drop and a reduction in cargo volumes.
According to the Third Quarter Gross Domestic Product Report 2024, released on Tuesday, January 7, commuters using train services decreased from 701,132 in the third quarter of 2023 to 650,352 in the same time in 2024.
According to the report, the fall represented a 7.2% drop in the number of passengers transported by train.
