Nairobi Central OCS Talam Arrested In Eldoret

The DCI has announced that Nairobi Central Police Station’s Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Samson Talam, was captured on Friday following a day-long manhunt in Eldoret.

According to the DCI, Talam turned off his phone on Thursday as officers closed in on him.

He was finally apprehended, arrested, and turned over to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for additional processing.

His arrest raises the total number of people in jail in connection with Albert Ojwang’s death, which occurred in police custody under questionable circumstances.

Another female officer linked to the matter was questioned for several hours on Friday and is anticipated to face additional questions.

Talam is considered a main suspect after many witnesses and suspects allegedly accused him in Ipoa’s ongoing inquiry.

Ojwang had been arrested at his residence in Homa Bay on charges of spreading fake information.

He was transferred to Nairobi and booked at the Central Police Station.

He died subsequently after allegedly being violently abused while in detention.

Ojwang’s death has prompted public indignation and increased scrutiny of police conduct.

So far, two other police officers and a technician accused of tampering with surveillance film have been detained.

Investigations have uncovered attempts to conceal the occurrence.

Ipoa stated that some of the 17 policemen questioned in the case had subsequently returned to the oversight committee to alter their initial testimonies and provide further information concerning the tragic assault.

According to sources, cops have confirmed that the murder occurred within the Central Police Station cells, and detectives are looking for the riot baton thought to have been used.

A total of 23 people—including 17 police officers and six civilians—have been questioned as suspects or witnesses. Among them is a technician who installed the station’s CCTV system.

He acknowledged receiving Sh3,000 to erase and format footage from the night Ojwang died.

Meanwhile, Ipoa was given permission to keep Constable James Mukhwana for seven days while investigations continued.

In records submitted at the Milimani Law Courts, Ipoa indicated that preliminary findings implicate Mukhwana and other officers who have yet to be detained in the fatal assault.

They also accused the cops of taking part in a coordinated cover-up.

Ipoa argued against Mukhwana’s release, noting the likelihood of witness interference and evidence tampering, particularly key custody records.

The monitoring body also stated that forensic tests of the suspects’ mobile phones and results from the government chemist are still awaited, but are expected to play an important part in the investigation.

Mukhwana is currently being held at the Capitol Hill Police Station as the IPOA investigates the case.
