TRAGIC! Kenya’s Police Oversee Another Police Cell Death In Nanyuki

A Nanyuki family is mourning the death of a loved one, who apparently died as a result of a suspected assault while being held in police custody.

Julie Njoki was detained on Monday, July 7, during the Saba Saba demonstrations and transported to Nanyuki Police Station.

In a heartbreaking and lengthy testimony, Njoki’s aunt said that police officers viciously attacked her niece at the station and left her unconscious.

“Julie was arrested in Nanyuki, a town I once thought was peaceful. The next day, she was taken to the Nanyuki Law Court, and judgment was passed,” Njoki’s aunt wrote.

“That same night, in police custody, she was brutally beaten. The same people who are meant to protect her left her unconscious.”

According to the family, Julie was rushed to the hospital, where a medical assessment confirmed that she had sustained blunt force damage to the head, which is consistent with physical assault.

The family believes that authorities delayed care and tried to hide the severity of her injuries.

“This critical condition was met with delays, carelessness, and silence. By the time real help came, it was too late. We lost Julie. She didn’t deserve to die. No one does,” the aunt continued.

The family has expressed their dissatisfaction with the police system, which, instead of protecting its citizens, was killing them.

“I’m broken. I’m angry. I’m grieving. How do you jail a Gen Z on Monday and report them dead by Wednesday? How are we supposed to trust a system that kills the very people it’s meant to protect?” the aunt exclaimed.

Her killing has generated renewed indignation among Kenyans, who are still mourning the recent death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody at Nairobi Central Police Station.

A number of officials and members of the public have resorted to social media to criticize the ongoing incidents of police brutality against Kenyan youngsters.

As the country mourns the loss of yet another young life, the focus shifts back to the police department, which has yet to comment on the claims, and whether justice will be served.
