Karua Breaks Silence On Meeting Gachagua At The Seattle Diaspora Event

Over the weekend, opposition leaders Martha Karua and Rigathi Gachagua issued a united statement condemning state repression.

On Saturday, the duo attended the inaugural “Ngemi Cia Ruraya” festival at Seattle’s Saghalie Park.

Karua, the chairman of the People’s Liberation Party and a long-time civil rights advocate, was the keynote speaker at the cultural event, which brought together Kenyan diaspora people in the United States Pacific Northwest.

Gachagua, the former Deputy President and current leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), attended alongside his wife, Pastor Dorcas Gachagua.

Karua clarified that while she and Gachagua attended the event, they were invited independently and had separate travel plans.

This is despite the fact that their united performance at the festival garnered widespread public interest back home.

“I am here as Ngemi Festival’s chief guest, while @rigathi, my brother, was invited separately and is accompanied by @dorcasrigathi_,” Karua wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“We are attending the same event, each traveling separately.”

Despite the practical differences, the two opposition leaders struck a similar tone in their harsh criticism of the current administration’s management of dissent and governance.

Karua utilized her position to push for radical political regeneration in Kenya, condemning what she saw as a state that had turned against its own people.

“We don’t need a government that abducts, kills, and steals from its own people,” she said.

“We are here to offer a transformational alternative—leadership anchored in justice and dignity.”

Gachagua, speaking to the diaspora audience, reiterated the sentiment, accusing the administration of utilizing state apparatus to stifle critical voices, particularly the young.

“They have killed our Gen Zs, and the rest face trumped-up charges in court,” he said.

“This regime is using fear to suppress dissent. But we are telling Kenyans—don’t be afraid. We must confront this head-on.”
