KNH Issues New Details About Suspect in Ward Killing
Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has issued an update regarding the death of a patient at the facility.
The hospital released previously unknown information on the suspect suspected of being responsible for the tragic murder.
In a statement released on Friday, July 18, KNH revealed that the suspect had been a patient at the hospital and was still there despite being officially discharged.
According to KNH, the suspect was a long-term patient who was initially admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in November 2022 before being transferred to the general ward.
However, because he was homeless and had no known family or established identity, he stayed in the hospital after being discharged.
The hospital attempted to identify him multiple times, including through fingerprint analysis and social media profiles.

According to KNH, in June 2024, the hospital was able to locate a house for the suspect to be discharged.
However, he became unwell in December 2024, was readmitted to KNH, and was discharged in January 2025.
“Upon discharge, the home that previously hosted him declined to take him back for unknown reasons,” KNH stated.
“In the interim, the suspect remained in KNH as we tried to look for alternative accommodation.”
However, the murder of 40-year-old Gilbert Kinyua in February 2025 hampered efforts to put the suspect in premises outside the hospital.
This comes after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) identified him as a person of interest in Kinyua’s death and advised the medical facility to keep him pending the outcome of their investigations.
It was around this time when Edward Maingi Ndegwa, a male patient brought to Ward 7B on July 11, 2025, was murdered, with the suspect assumed to be at fault.
“We emphasise that the suspect had been discharged, and the hospital did not intend or desire to host him indefinitely,” KNH stated.
“However, in the absence of alternative options and pending direction from investigative agencies, we had no choice but to continue with his stay in the hospital.”
DCI officers arrested the guy on Thursday evening, July 17, as the primary suspect in Ndegwa’s murder.
According to initial reports, a nurse examined the patient on Thursday, July 17, at 11:30 a.m. and took his blood pressure.

A relative paid him a visit at 12:30 p.m. and determined that he was stable before departing the ward at 1:30 p.m.
However, at around 2:00 p.m. the same day, a hospital cleaner walking down the corridor spotted blood flowing from the patient’s neck.
Detectives were quickly alerted and, upon arrival at the scene, traced bloody slipper prints from the victim’s bedside to a nearby toilet and eventually to a side room, where the suspect had been admitted.
In the room, investigators recovered a pair of blue slippers and a blood-stained bedsheet.
During the investigation, they also discovered a knife wrapped in gloves.
