Activist Boniface Mwangi Arrested By DCI Officers While At Home
Boniface Mwangi, a prominent human rights campaigner, has apparently been arrested by people who are suspected to be Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers.
According to the activist’s wife, Mwangi was arrested on Saturday afternoon at his home in Machakos County’s Lukenya region, Mavoko Sub-County.
She said that after arresting Mwangi, the officials took his equipment and informed him that he would be taken to the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road in Nairobi.

While regretting Mwangi’s imprisonment, his wife branded it as an act of terrorism and arson and demanded the activist’s immediate release.
“The police have come to our home in Courage Base and are taking my husband, talking of terrorism and arson!” said the wife.
“They’ve taken his gadgets and said they are taking him to DCI headquarters. I can’t breathe!”
Mwangi’s lawyer, James Kamau, stated that DCI officers paid a surprise visit to the activist’s home and ransacked it before arresting him.
He remarked that, despite Mwangi’s quick arrest, the authorities did not provide any explanation for his detention.

However, the lawyer insisted that they were investigating the situation to see why the activist had been arrested.
Boniface Mwangi has criticised President William Ruto’s administration, accusing it of arranging kidnappings and illegal killings.
He recently criticized the government for failing to act despite his arrest and abuse in Tanzania.

His detention also follows his decision to submit a petition against Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu’s administration to the East African Court of Justice.
Mwangi, Uganda’s Agather Atuhaire, and seven civil society organisations accused Tanzania’s government of gross human rights abuses in a petition filed on Friday, July 18.

Enforced disappearance, torture, arbitrary detention, sexual abuse, and unlawful deportation are all examples of violations.
The campaigners are also requesting formal apologies from the governments of Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. Furthermore, they are seeking compensation of Ksh130 million each.
