Gov’t Drops Terrorism Charges Against Activist Boniface Mwangi

The prosecution has dismissed terrorism allegations against activist Boniface Mwangi, who was arrested on Saturday.

Mwangi, who was arraigned at the Kahawa Law Courts on Monday morning, is accused of two counts of possessing ammunition without a valid weapons certificate.

In a charging document, the activist was accused of possessing three teargas canisters and one round of blank ammunition.

“On July 19, 2025, at Mageuzi Hub in Nairobi County within the Republic of Kenya, you were found in possession of noxious substances, to wit, three teargas cannisters without lawful authority,” count one reads.

“On July 19, 2025, at Mageuzi Hub in Nairobi County within the Republic of Kenya, you were found in possession of one round of 7.62×21mm blank ammunition without lawful authority,” count two reads.

On Saturday, July 19, officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stormed his Hurlingham offices and arrested him for “facilitation of terrorism”.

The following day, DCI confirmed the arrest and claimed to have retrieved various things.

These include a 7.62mm blank bullet and two unused teargas canisters—not the three shown on the charge sheet.

Other things listed in the DCI reports included nine external hard drives, two laptops, two firm seals, a company stamp, six checkbooks, and copies of stamp duty documentation.
