President William Ruto and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine have decided to strengthen their bilateral relations with an emphasis on high-tech collaboration, agriculture, and education.

President Ruto was the only African head of state present when the two leaders met on the fringes of the G7 Summit on June 17 in Évian, France.

Both countries decided to strengthen their links in sectors including investment attraction, agriculture, education, and high-tech advancement after their talks focused on practical issues. They also promised to let their teams work out the specifics.

“During a meeting with the President of Kenya, William Ruto, we discussed the development of high-tech cooperation across various sectors: investment attraction, agriculture, and education,” stated President Zelensky.

“We are ready to share our experience with Kenya and implement joint projects. We agreed that our teams will work out the details of possible cooperation.”

A foundation of agreements totaling approximately Ksh2 billion (nearly USD15 million) across multiple sectors already exists between the two nations.

These include a grain hub deal that would see a Ukrainian grain facility established at the Port of Mombasa to bolster food security across East Africa.

Beyond food, Kenya and Ukraine have an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between their respective space agencies for peaceful outer space exploration, as well as an agreement on aviation safety oversight.

Kenya supports efforts to advance a peaceful resolution to the Russia–Ukraine conflict through dialogue, diplomacy and respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter.

Business linkages are also in place, with Kenya’s Private Sector Alliance and the East African Chamber of Commerce (EACC) formally connected to Ukraine’s Council of Exporters and Investors through signed MoUs.

Kenya has also backed Ukraine at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

It voted in support of resolutions related to the ongoing conflict with Russia, a gesture President Zelensky acknowledged during their meeting.

President Ruto has also consistently been vocal about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, repeatedly describing it as unlawful and a direct violation of the United Nations Charter since taking office.

His presence at the summit was no coincidence.

French President Emmanuel Macron personally invited him to ensure African voices were part of conversations on global financial reform and equitable development.

This relationship was sealed during the April Africa Forward Summit, which the two heads of state co-hosted.
