CS Mvurya Updates On 70% Complete Stadium Commissioned In 2017

Salim Mvurya, the Sports Cabinet Secretary, has informed that the development of Wote Stadium in Makueni County is currently at 70% of its planned scope.

Mvurya, who appeared before the Senate on Wednesday, July 23, said that phase one of the stadium’s development was recently finished for Ksh299 million.

He went on to say that the Makueni County Government was working with the national government to expedite the stadium’s construction and completion.

In 2017, then-Deputy President William Ruto commissioned the stadium construction work.

Ruto had promised that it would be completed within six months, in accordance with the then-Jubilee government’s plan to establish world-class sports facilities around the country.

Wote was one of the stadiums promised by the Jubilee government ahead of the 2017 general election.

Upon completion, the stadium is expected to seat 20,000 people and comfortably hold national and international track competitions.

However, the project came to a halt, with residents fearing that the cutting-edge sports complex was nothing more than a pipe dream.

CS Mvurya explained that delays in the stadium’s construction were caused by a variety of factors, including a change of site.

The CS stated that the Makueni County Government modified the project’s original site, resulting in delays.

Another reason given by the CS was that the new site presented topographical challenges that required mitigation measures to stabilize the ground.

This was in addition to budget non-allocations in fiscal years 2018/2019 and 2019/2020, which caused delays in contractor and consultant payments.

He further mentioned that contractual management issues emerged after the contractor was asked to leave the site.

“The project timelines have been extended multiple times, from the initial completion target of June 2018 to October 2020, February 2022, February 2024, January 2025, and now September 2025,” Mvurya further expressed.

Despite these problems, Mvurya stated that the Ministry has prioritized the stadium’s completion.

“Current efforts are focused on completing the pending works, which include laying the athletics track, constructing players’ changing rooms, and building a public ablution block,” he stated.

“Other remaining tasks include completing the perimeter wall and gates, drilling a borehole, installing a pump for the irrigation system, and constructing a pump house,” Mvurya noted.

Furthermore, the CS stated that due to topographical problems, the Ministry was reconsidering the project scope to convert it into a functioning training facility with a football pitch, athletics track, player changing facilities, and a public restroom building.
