Lecturers End 49-Day Strike, Agree Payment In Installments
On Wednesday, November 5, the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) called off the lecturers’ strike, which had been disrupting university operations across the country since September.
The decision to call off the strike came after the government pledged to pay the outstanding Ksh7.9 billion in salary arrears from the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
According to UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga, the professors and the government have agreed on a two-phase payment of Ksh7.9 billion.
According to the most recent agreement, the first phase of the payment would take place between November and December, with the second phase scheduled for July 2026.
The agreement concludes the 49-day industrial action, which was marked by accusations and counter-accusations between the government and the lecturers’ unions.
Addressing the press, Wasonga reassured university students that lecturers are committed to properly recovering lost learning time, with current semester dates set to be slightly extended.
“I want to apologise to the comrades for the 42 plus days they have lost,” the UASU Secretary General stated.
“However, our members have committed that they are going to recover the lost time fully. It is upon the government that you honour what we have signed here today.
“If you honour what we have signed here today, I want to commit that there shall be no strike called by UASU up to 2030,” he added.
He did, however, warn that if the government fails to follow the agreement, the lecturers’ unions will immediately call another strike, beginning next Monday.

The agreement paves the way for negotiations on the 2025-2029 CBA, which are scheduled to be completed within the next 30 days under the most recent return-to-work formula.
Meanwhile, the latest agreement comes a day after the lecturers’ unions hinted at ending the industrial action following an intervention by the National Assembly’s Committee on Education.
Wasonga, while appearing before the committee, stated that the union would convene its organs to reconsider its position on the government’s offer for the sake of the learners.
