ODM Makes Top Leadership Changes, Ratifies Oburu Odinga

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has formally named Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga as its party head, promoting him from interim status.

On Thursday, November 13, the party announced that its National Governing Council (NGC) had approved Oburu’s new position, with Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir, Godfrey Osotsi, and Simba Arati confirmed as Deputy Party Leaders.

“The National Governing Council (NGC) has approved the appointment of Senator Oburu Odinga as the Party Leader of the party,” ODM said.

“Also approved are DPLs Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir, Godfrey Osotsi, and Simba Arati as Deputy Party Leaders.”

Aside from Oburu’s promotion, the party made several leadership changes, including approving the appointment of Kisumu Woman Rep Ruth Odinga to Deputy Organising Secretary.

The selections of Otiendo Amollo (Rarieda MP) and Ariko Namoit (Turkana South MP) as Vice Chairpersons of the party were also accepted, joining Johnes Mwaruma and Christine Lemein.

Rosa Buyu’s appointment as Secretary of Political Affairs was also accepted, with the group scheduled to take office pending ratification by the National Delegates Convention (NDC).

Oburu’s formal role comes just a month after he was named temporary party leader following the death of his brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, on Wednesday, October 15, in India.

His appointment followed a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Thursday, October 16, prior to the arrival of Raila’s body in Kenya.

The formalisation of Oburu’s position had been a question of when, not if, as ODM has already stated that the long-serving legislator will become the party’s permanent leader.

The ODM Founders’ Dinner on Saturday is expected to draw top members of ODM’s leadership as well as significant national officials, including President William Ruto.

The appointments are intended to reflect ODM’s direction as it prepares for a future without its leader, Raila.

Key pressing areas for the party are the ongoing broad-based partnership with Ruto and the 2027 General Election.
