COTU Demands Immediate Deportation of Chinese Man Who Assaulted Worker
The Central Organisation of Trade Unions in Kenya (COTU-K) has called for the deportation of the Chinese national (Xiao Jianzhoun) captured on film in a physical conflict with a Kenyan employee (Andrew Kagua).

In a statement issued on Sunday, November 16, COTU accused the Chinese national of grossly violating the rights and dignity of the Kenyans in the video.
They called on authorities to crack down on rogue foreign workers abusing their position.
“COTU is deeply concerned by the prevalent cases of abuse of Kenyan workers by foreign investors,” a statement from the union said.
“We will not stand and watch the dignity of Kenyan workers violated by some rogue Chinese employers operating within our borders.”

A video that has since gone viral on social media shows the Chinese national punching the Kenyan employee, who tries his best to remain calm.
Despite the Chinese national’s repeated physical provocations, the worker does little to respond, while a voice in the background encourages him to fight back.
Following the incident, it was found that the worker and the Chinese national had reconciled, but some online users interpreted the reunion as malicious.

The union reported another incident in which a Chinese worker was spotted pushing Kenyan colleagues to sing native Chinese songs at work.

For this event, COTU identified the rogue Chinese manager by name, passport number, and KRA pin, accusing him of putting Kenyan workers to lengthy working hours for low pay.
Besides deportation, COTU further called on the Ministry of Interior to strengthen monitoring of firms managed by foreign nationals.
“We urge the Ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, to strengthen monitoring, compliance and enforcement measures relating to enterprises run by foreign nationals,” the statement went on.
