Kenyan Politician Who Went Missing Found In Uganda

Shadrack Maritim, a Kenyan politician and former Tinderet parliamentary candidate who went missing in October, was recovered alive in Uganda.

Maritim, who had gone missing after leaving his residence for a morning exercise, was discovered in Mbale, Uganda, on Wednesday, December 3.

Prior to his disappearance, he allegedly obtained information from a top officer at the National Police Service Commission.

This event comes after another terrible case in which two human rights advocates, Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, were kidnapped and imprisoned in the East African country for more than a month.

Maritim’s family initially claimed that the senior NPSC officer intimidated him, stating that challenging him would result in consequences.

At the same time, the family petitioned the High Court for habeas corpus, requesting that the government produce their cousin and explain the circumstances of his absence.

However, when the case came before the court on Wednesday, it was revealed that the politician had contacted his family on Tuesday of this week, alleging that his abductors had abandoned him near Mbale.

According to the family’s lawyer, Kibe Mungai, Maritim seemed scared throughout the phone call with his brother.

Maritim has yet to speak or address the media about the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

Furthermore, neither the Kenyan nor the Ugandan governments have commented on the developments.

The politician is running for Tinderent’s parliamentary seat in the 2027 general elections, hoping to topple current MP Julius Melly, one of the region’s longest-serving MPs.

Nonetheless, social media photos showed Maritim purportedly riding abroad in a Ugandan police land cruiser while riding around the streets of the neighboring country with his brother.

Meanwhile, United Nations Human Rights Chief Volker Türk has warned Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni against arbitrary arrests and detentions of activists and opposition leaders.

In a statement on Wednesday, December 4, Volker weighed in on the escalating crackdown on Uganda’s opposition ahead of next month’s general elections.
