HELB Issues Statement On KMTC Loan Application Reports
The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has advised students about a bogus letter circulating online saying that applications for 2026/27 Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) first-time and subsequent loans will be accepted on July 15.
On July 1, HELB issued a public warning clarifying that the notice was not issued and urging students to verify all loan-related communication through its proper channels.
“The KMTC loan application notice circulating online is FAKE and was not issued by HELB. Always verify all communication through HELB’s official channels only,” the notice read.
The fake notice was aimed at students who had been waiting for details on the launch of the loan application portal, which HELB said would be available in the second week of July.
The false advertisement instructed KMTC students to prepare application paperwork ahead of the alleged opening date.

However, HELB has come out to dismiss the information as false and urged students to remain vigilant against misinformation and potential scams.
Further, the board emphasised that the only phone number that should not be used for enquiries or services is 0711052000, cautioning the public against using the one listed in the flagged notice.
The opening of the portal depends on the completion of student placement by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

Official placement is yet to begin as KUCCPS continues to allow students who missed the deadline to request consideration by submitting an email after having previously extended the application window.
However, subsequent loan applications for continuing students for the 2026/2027 academic year were opened on June 1.
Though the exact portal opening date for first-time applicants is yet to be specified, students who sat their 2025 KCSE examinations have been instructed to prepare the required documentation as they wait.
Applicants have been directed to have on hand a copy of their National ID, Maisha Card or birth certificate, as well as a passport-size photo.
Students will also need an email address and mobile phone number, as well as their KCPE and KCSE index numbers and the years they sat the examinations.
