FKF Breaks Silence After Claims Kenya U15 Team Stranded In Uganda

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has been obliged to reply to reports that the Kenyan boys’ and girls’ U15 teams were abandoned in Uganda after the African Schools Football Championship.

In a statement issued Thursday evening, December 11, the FKF denied that the team had been left without lodging.

The federation indicated that they had a thorough description of the prior day’s events.

According to the FKF, the teams checked out of their accommodations on time but were delayed on their way to the airport. This caused a disruption in their schedule.

Due to severe laws prohibiting junior teams from travelling at night and due to schedule disruption, the team was unable to proceed with the late departure.

To comply with the Ministry of Education’s safety requirements for student night travel, the teams were compelled to stay at the host school overnight rather than travel after dark.

FKF stated that despite the delay, the teenagers were never left stranded without aid.

“CECAFA and St. Mary’s Kitende ensured that the teams were fully supported throughout this period,” a statement from FKF said.

“CECAFA has since informed CAF of the situation and confirmed that the welfare, comfort, and safety of the Kenyan delegation were prioritised while on site. The teams are now en route back to Kenya.”

The federation also stated that the team’s logistics have since been resolved, and they are on their way back to the country as of the publication of this piece.

“FKF acknowledges the logistical, administrative, and operational challenges experienced during this assignment and is reviewing internal processes and capacities to strengthen coordination for future engagements,” the statement added.

“We sincerely appreciate the support of CECAFA and our hosts and remain committed to providing safe, well-organised environments for all our youth teams.”

The teams were in Uganda for the CECAFA-CAF African Schools Championship, a regional tournament bringing together top U15 school teams across East and Central Africa.

This year’s event featured competitive fixtures, training camps, mentorship sessions and CAF-driven youth development programs meant to identify talent for future elite pathways
