KWS Kills 2 Elephants After Series Of Fatal Attacks On Residents

Kenya Wildlife Services has killed two elephants in Kajiado West after they had taken part in the deaths of several individuals in the area within a week.

According to neighbors, the animals were responsible for the deaths of residents in several spots throughout the area, the most recent being that of a 40-year-old in the Ikiroti area on December 23.

Previously, three individuals died, including an ECDE teacher who was trampled by an elephant at Iloodokilan.

Other victims of the animals include a 23-year-old in Oltepes and a 41-year-old in Mosiro.

A survivor of one of the events claimed that an elephant confronted three individuals.

One guy escaped after being pushed into a trench, but another was trampled and murdered after crossing it.

“We were three; the other one was lucky – he was thrown into the trench,” a survivor narrated.

“I was also lucky because it was after I crossed the trench that the elephant stepped on him.”

According to KWS personnel, the impacted sites are located along an established elephant corridor that elephants use to travel from the Emara and Magadi regions to Amboseli National Park.

The relocation has resulted in more interactions between elephants and residents.

“This place is a corridor where elephants from Emara and Magadi come here, headed to Amboseli,” a KWS officer stated.

“The elephants are many, and they prefer coming here because the habitat is still intact.”

Kajiado West MP George Sukuya stated that elephants had been obstructing roads and accessing homesteads, and that the victims had been attacked at or near their homes.

“There are other elephants who stand in the way and even come to people’s homes. Even the people who were killed were from their homes,” Kajiado West MP George Sukuya stated.

The Kajiado events occurred during a period of increased lethal human-elephant conflict in Kenya in 2025. Other recorded incidents this year included deaths in Isiolo and Kwale.

In Kitui, an elephant murdered a ranger in the Kirisia Forest.

Whereas in Samburu, Narok, Laikipia, and Kericho counties, the deaths involved farmers, herders, and schoolchildren.
