KFS Demolishes Primary School in Baringo Over Disputed Land
The fate of Loramoru Primary School in Marigat, Baringo South Sub-County, is unknown after its classrooms were demolished in an operation purportedly carried out by Kenya Forest Service officers.
The event has hampered learning in a region that has just lately recovered from years of unrest.
The school, which is approximately 40 years old, was previously shuttered owing to chronic banditry in the area.
Loramoru Primary School was restored in 2024 as part of larger attempts to restore normalcy and cultivate peace after the Pokot people and their neighbours reached a ceasefire deal.
Learning resumed when the family who had escaped the turmoil gradually came home.
Residents maintained that the school was properly registered, with both a Ministry of Health and a Teachers Service Commission (TSC) code.

They noted that the institution was only reactivated after peace talks restored quiet in the region.
According to the residents, officers claiming to be from the KFS invaded the area and destroyed the semi-permanent classrooms, saying that the facilities were built on gazetted forest land.
Tensions rose as the leaders attempted to enter and reconstruct the school, but were denied by the police.
Another resident reported that a call was made to the cops from the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) requesting that school-related materials be detained.
Residents are now demanding clarity, saying they want an official report to understand what decisions were made and why.
Community members have expressed concern that the disruption of education could undermine peace in the area.

They argue that keeping children in school is essential to maintaining stability as discussions over the KFS issue continue.
Additionally, they argued that the school has played a key role in supporting the fragile peace currently being enjoyed.
Baringo South Member of Parliament echoed these concerns, saying the school serves children from vulnerable families, including those who have recently returned after years of displacement.
He noted that peace is gradually being restored and described the school as semi-permanent, emphasising its importance to the community.
