IG Kanja, IPOA Launch Investigations Into Viral Police Violence In Nandi
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has ordered a prompt probe into an alleged instance of misbehavior by personnel stationed at Nandi Hills Police Station.
This follows the now-viral spread of frightening CCTV images on social media.
In the now-viral CCTV footage, ten armed police officers are seen attacking young men who were playing pool in Nandi Hills municipality, causing considerable indignation.
In a statement made on Friday, National Police Service (NPS) Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga stated that the IG has personally seen the tape.
The IG has asked the Internal Affairs Unit to complete investigations within three days, after which any officers found guilty will face appropriate punishment.
“The Inspector General of the National Police Service has personally gained sight of the galling clip and has ordered a comprehensive and swift investigation into the incident,” Nyaga said.
“This will be conducted with the utmost professionalism to establish the full facts and circumstances, and the Service will work closely with other independent institutions to ensure transparency and accountability.”
The statement went on, “Upon conclusion of the investigation, any officer found culpable will be dealt with accordingly.”
According to a preliminary examination by the NPS, the incident occurred on January 10, 2026, and the police service is highly concerned about the tape, which exposes significant officer misconduct.
The NPS sharply criticized the behavior caught in the video, labeling it as “barbaric behavior that has no place in a civilized society.”
They further stated that the activities violate the National Police Service Act, the Police Officers’ Code of Conduct, and fundamental human rights values.
The police leadership also urged personnel not to engage in wrongdoing, emphasizing the importance of remaining courteous, respectful, and professional when serving the public.
They underlined that any deviation from this would be dealt with sternly and in accordance with the law.
“The National Police Service wishes to reassure the public that this isolated incident does not reflect the values, standards, and training of the Service,” Nyaga stated.
“To all officers out there, service to the people must at all times remain courteous, respectful and professional.”
Adding, “Anything short of this shall be dealt with firmly, swiftly and as per the laws, regulations and procedures.
“NPS remains committed to our mission of serving and protecting all Kenyans in a fair, lawful, and professional manner.”

Members of the public with information that may assist the ongoing investigations have been urged to report to the nearest police station or call the toll-free numbers.
This comes after the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) also said it had begun investigations into the incident of alleged police brutality.
In an earlier statement, IPOA Chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan said the authority had deployed a Rapid Investigations Team to Nandi Hills.
“Our officers will conduct thorough inquiries to establish the sequence of events, assess the conduct of the officers involved, and determine culpability, if any, in line with the IPOA mandate,” read the IPOA statement.
