Martha Karua Breaks Silence On Sifuna’s ODM Ouster Amid Absorption Plan

Hours after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ousted Edwin Sifuna as Secretary-General, People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua has spoken out to clarify allegations that the opposition will soon absorb him.

Karua remarked in an interview with TV47 on Thursday, February 12, that the opposition would not rush to make choices and would instead let events within ODM unfold naturally.

“We will not hurry to do that. We will let him choose his own path, and we are not sure that he has been ousted properly,” Karua said.

“We wait for things to unfold. He might end up coming back bigger and better.”

In her speech, the PLP leader questioned the procedural integrity of Sifuna’s firing, stating that the incident seemed to indicate deeper inside-party disputes.

“Things are imploding slowly, and we do not know whether this is the end. We do not know whether the right procedure was followed, and this party seems to have an internal struggle,” she added.

Karua, on the other hand, was quick to compliment Sifuna’s contributions to ODM, calling him a capable and effective leader who has played an important role in the party’s growth.

“Edwin Sifuna is a brilliant, knowledgeable politician who has done a sterling job as ODM Secretary-General,” Karua maintained.

Karua’s clarification comes barely hours after the ODM’s National Executive Committee (NEC) decided to fire Sifuna as party Secretary General during a meeting in Mombasa on Wednesday, February 11.

While speaking to the press, NEC members expressed deep worry about what they described as Sifuna’s chronic indiscipline, particularly towards party leadership.

“The National Executive Council (NEC) expressed concern over rising levels of indiscipline within the party, especially within senior leadership positions,” a statement from ODM’s NEC read.

“Having deliberated on matters relating to the conduct of Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, the NEC resolved to remove him from office effective immediately,” it added.

Following Sifuna’s departure, Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omayo, who previously served as the party’s deputy Secretary General, took up Sifuna’s position.
