Egypt To Build Ksh12.9 Billion Dam Along Nile Basin For Kenya
Egypt is apparently proposing a Ksh12.9 billion financial framework to support dam development and water projects in Kenya, indicating a potential shift in regional cooperation within the Nile Basin.
The idea was made during high-level talks in Nairobi, chaired by Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty.
Abdelatty stressed the importance of inclusive involvement among Nile Basin countries to ensure shared benefits and avoid conflicts over water resources.
Speaking at Railways Headquarters in Nairobi, Egyptian Foreign Affairs Minister Badr Abdelatty highlighted efforts to boost trade and investment between Egypt and Kenya and remove barriers to economic flow.

According to the proposal, the monies will be used to support Southern Nile Basin activities such as increased rainwater collection programs and important infrastructure projects like the Koru Dam.
The proposed funding mechanism, launched in late 2024, is designed to support projects that align with these principles, particularly those that do not significantly reduce water flow to downstream countries.

For Kenya, the proposal presents an opportunity to expand its water infrastructure, enhance climate resilience, and support agricultural productivity through improved water management systems.
However, the offer also places Kenya within a delicate geopolitical balance, as it maintains strong ties with Egypt and Ethiopia, which are two nations with competing interests over Nile resources.
