Oburu Reacts To Sifuna’s Kitengela Rally, Condemns Excessive Police Force

Oburu Oginga, ODM Party leader and Siaya Senator, has condemned last weekend’s teargas incident in Kitengela during a rally attended by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, who has been under fire.

Oburu demanded a thorough police inquiry and accountability for those guilty, claiming the incident violated the Constitution.

While speaking to the Senate on Wednesday, Oburu emphasized the importance of restraint and obedience to the rule of law, stressing that such instances risk compromising current political and governance efforts.

“I did not like what happened last weekend in Kitengela when people were teargassed in a rally,” Oburu said.

“I hope the police will investigate it thoroughly and the culprits will be punished accordingly because we are in the implementation of the 10-point agenda.”

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Wananchi movement conducted a demonstration in Kitengela that ended abruptly when tear gas was thrown into the throng.

Crowds gathered as leaders addressed them, and cries of “One Term” were audible throughout the rally.

The Kitengela meeting occurred a week after his inaugural rally in Busia, which drew enormous crowds. The Nairobi Senator described the turnout as good.

“Kenyans have given me comfort in knowing that even if they do away with Sifuna, another 15 million Sifunas will emerge to continue the mission,” he said.

Sifuna, who was dismissed as ODM Secretary General before being reinstated by the Political Parties Tribunal, disagreed with his party’s head, Oburu Oginga, and now leads a faction inside the party.

“They may have the party, but we have the members,” Embakasi East MP Babu Owino said, referring to the Linda Wananchi team.

Following Raila Odinga’s death, the two groups divided on the future of ODM.

Opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka slammed the incident, calling it state-sponsored repression.

“Our national anthem declares that justice be our shield and defender, yet we witness justice denied and our people attacked for demanding their rights,” he said.

He also voiced concern with the police’s failure to arrest those involved in the ACK Witima Church attack.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was teargassed, as were members of the congregation.

“Today, February 16, we returned to receive that report. The Inspector General of Police and his entire team failed to appear, despite formal notification,” Kalonzo said.

Kalonzo described their absence as a calculated choice, saying they chose silence over accountability and defiance over their duty to taxpayers.
