Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has blamed the turmoil that disrupted a breakaway ODM faction event on Sunday, February 15, on individuals purportedly shipped from Machakos.

Speaking at a Huduma na Usalama mashinani forum in Naivasha, Murkomen said that goons were brought in from Machakos to disrupt the gathering, resulting in the turmoil seen at the meeting.

The CS also indicated that police had not been formally notified of the meeting, which limited their capacity to regulate the throng.

“Tell those seeking votes, those seeking to compete in elections, that we will not allow it,” he said.

“The government of William Ruto will not allow it. Our police officers are under firm instructions to deal with people who are inciting communities with finality.”

One person died as a result of the disruption on Sunday, while scores more were injured after police threw tear gas at the attendees.

The CS blamed the death and injuries on the date of the meeting, claiming that it coincided with a market day in the neighborhood.

Sifuna’s Linda Wananchi rally began peacefully, but turned violent near the conclusion when a teargas canister was thrown into the throng.

Witnesses reported elderly women needing aid to escape the stifling vapors, as traders, boda boda riders, and locals scampered for safety in all directions.

While many fled, a large number of young people stayed on the ground, engaging police in running skirmishes and singing anti-government slogans even after the political leaders were taken away.

A group of protesters raided the Kitengela Police Station and the DO’s office, removing the national flag and setting offices on fire.

In response to the chaos, Sifuna issued a defiant statement, directly blaming top government officials for the violence and the death of a resident.

He further condemned the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Vincent Ayomo, a local garage worker.

The CS described it as senseless and needless killing and vowed to pursue justice for Ayomo’s family and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

“They do not respect the rights of Kenyans and are intolerant of democratic competition,” he said.

“They have chosen to unleash state violence on Kenyans instead of addressing the many challenges facing them.”
