“Don’t Go Back On Your Word On Broad-Based Gov’t!” – Gladys Wanga Tells Sifuna

Gladys Wanga, chairperson of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has accused popular Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna of using doublespeak to justify his opposition to the broad-based administration.

Speaking in Kisumu on Wednesday, February 25, Wanga discussed how the broad-based government came to be, noting that Sifuna had an important role in its establishment.

Wanga stated that Sifuna, who was then the ODM party secretary-general, drafted the 10-point agenda on directions from Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o.

The 10-point agenda, which arrived at a period when Kenya was experiencing political unrest, eventually gave way to the broad-based government after ODM and President William Ruto’s UDA signed a memorandum of understanding.

“We can all remember the Gen Z demonstrations in June 2024. But Raila wanted stability in the country, and he donated experts to the government, which was the beginning of the broad-based government,” the Homa Bay governor revealed.

She went on, “On March 7, 2025, Raila and President Ruto went to KICC and signed the 10-point agenda memorandum, an agreement that formally recognised the arrangement.

Adding, “It is Sifuna who read the agreement on behalf of the odm party. But you are not aware that it is Sifuna who wrote the 10-point agenda.”

“But you can also remember that after the agreement signing, he went on a national TV while Raila was still alive and said Ruto will not be reelected in 2027.”

Regarding Sifuna’s view on the legality of the party’s leader, Oburu Odinga, Wanga stated that following Raila Odinga’s death, she called a national executive committee meeting to debate the party’s next steps.

According to her, this meeting was attended by Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Caleb Amisi, both members of the party’s Linda Mwananchi faction.

The meeting resolved that the party should have a leader, and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga was suggested and seconded.

Senator Oginga served in an acting capacity before being formally installed at the party’s 20th anniversary in November 2025.

“Sifuna is the one who swore in Oburu as our party leader. But he still argues that Oburu is in office illegally. Why did he swear him if indeed he was illegally installed?” Wanga posed.

According to the Homabay governor, the party has decided to formally begin pre-election consultations with other political parties.

Sifuna was seen at the airport boarding a plane to Mombasa, but then decided to miss the meeting, claiming his flight was delayed.

This constant defiance of the party’s position and double-speak ultimately led to his removal as the party secretary-general. Wanga, however, clarified that Sifuna remained a party member.
