SHA Lists EIGHT Foreign Hospitals Approved For Kenyans Seeking Treatment Abroad

A list of international hospitals where Kenyans can now receive specialized care under the Social Health Authority’s (SHA) foreign care package has been released by Mercy Mwangangi, the SHA’s chief executive officer.

The listed hospitals are:

  • Manipal Hospitals (India)
  • Acibadem Group of Hospitals (Turkey)
  • Medical Point Izmir Hospital (Turkey)
  • Yatharth Hospital (India)
  • Sitecare Hospital (India)
  • KIMS Hospital (India)
  • Sarvodaya Hospital (India)
  • SAGE Group (Saudi Arabia)

Mwangangi told the Senate that the specialised treatment benefit abroad will go into effect the following week.

She added that as more applications are received, more hospitals are being onboarded, and facilities are receiving training on how to use the SHA system to file and process claims.

The CEO also provided clarification on the referral process’s protocol. A patient would first be evaluated at a reputable medical facility in Kenya as part of the referral process.

A doctor at that facility must have assessed that the patient requires specialised care overseas and issued a formal referral to one of the Social Health Authority’s recognized hospitals.

The referral note would subsequently be sent to the SHA. The nominated overseas hospital, which has already been added to SHA’s system, will electronically record the admittance request.

Following the login, SHA will confirm that the patient is an active and paid-up member before authorizing treatment.

Once approval is granted, the patient can proceed with treatment at the approved foreign hospital.

After release, the foreign hospital will submit a discharge statement and claim to SHA for settlement within the KSh 500,000 coverage limit.

Upon returning to Kenya, the patient must report back to a designated local facility for follow-up care.
