NAIROBI: Massive Water Disruption Announced After Kabete-Kilimani Line Bursts

Nairobi residents in several estates, including the official residence of the president, will face a temporary water outage after a major pipeline burst disrupted supply across parts of the city.

In a public notice issued on Saturday, March 21, the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company announced that the water supply had been disrupted after a burst on the main Kabete-Kilimani transmission pipeline.

The utility company said the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, March 20, 2026, at around 1am, prompting an immediate response from technical teams to repair the damaged section of the pipeline.

“This is to inform you of a temporary water supply interruption in your area due to a burst pipe on the major Kabete-Kilimani transmission pipeline, which occurred last night, Friday, March 20, 2026, at 1 am,” Nairobi Water revealed.

Adding, “Our technical teams responded immediately, and repairs are ongoing to replace the damaged section, conduct pressure testing, and safely restore the system.”

Among the affected locations is the State House, depicting the extent of the disruption that is expected to impact both ordinary Kenyans and key institutions within the city.

Other areas experiencing water shortages include Kileleshwa, Kilimani, Ngumo, KEMRI, Highrise, Nairobi West, Upper Hill, Madaraka and the surrounding areas.

The water company assured city residents that repair works were actively underway, including the replacement of the damaged pipe section and pressure testing to ensure the system is safe before normal supply resumes.

According to the notice, water supply is expected to be fully restored by Sunday, March 22, 2026, at 6pm, provided repairs proceed as planned, and system integrity is confirmed.

“This timeline allows for thorough repairs on this critical transmission line while prioritising safety and infrastructure integrity,” the company reiterated.

In the meantime, residents have been urged to use any stored water sparingly and prioritise essential needs as the restoration process continues.

To cushion vulnerable groups and critical institutions, the company said water tanker services will be available for emergency and priority needs.

Customers requiring water tanker services were advised to dial *260# on their phones and select Option 5 to make a request.
