Gov't Pathologist Provides Postmortem Findings On Kware Dumpsite Bodies

Autopsy Reveals Cause Of Death Of Slain Nairobi Lawyer, Investigations Still Underway

The family of slain Nairobi advocate Tom Ouya Imbukwa has revealed preliminary findings from a postmortem examination, indicating he suffered extensive and severe injuries before his death.

The family lawyer Njanja Maina said the examination painted a disturbing picture, though it stopped short of conclusively identifying the cause of death.

She was speaking at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) farewell home on Friday, April 24.

“We can confirm as a family that the postmortem established that he had severe injuries on the right side of his body,” Maina said.

“What has caused the injuries in the manner and extent has not been established.”

She added that investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had already taken samples for forensic analysis in a bid to piece together what led to the fatal injuries.

“DCI officers from the investigative unit have taken samples for forensic analysis, with the injuries documented just to try and see what caused this death,” she stated.

“We can emphasise that his injuries were, however, very, very severe.”

Despite the grim findings, the family cautioned against drawing premature conclusions, noting that investigations were still ongoing and that determining the exact cause of death would require further forensic work.

They disclosed plans to meet DCI officers next week on Tuesday, where investigators are expected to present detailed documentation from the scene where Imbukwa’s body was found, alongside an analysis of CCTV footage.

The killing has sparked outrage within the legal fraternity, with the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) calling for urgent and credible investigations into the circumstances surrounding the advocate’s death.

LSK President Charles Kanjama described the incident as a tragic and shocking loss, saying early reports suggested the lawyer had been assaulted and tortured before being killed.

“Our colleague was assaulted, tortured, and murdered by unknown persons,” Kanjama said.

“The circumstances surrounding Tom’s death demand our unequivocal condemnation and immediate action.”

He urged members of the public with any information to come forward, assuring them of protection.

He warned that any individuals found responsible, including potential state actors, must be held fully accountable.

The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of legal practitioners in Kenya, coming several months after the fatal shooting of Nairobi lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu.

Advocate Mbobu died from multiple gunshot wounds in what was believed to be a targeted attack in September last year.
