Kirinyaga Women Rep Blocked From Accessing School Despite Lobbying Its Construction
Tension erupted at Kadawa Primary School in Mwea after police officers allegedly blocked Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina from accessing the institution, sparking protests from the area residents.
The Wednesday, May 6, incident unfolded as the MP attempted to preside over the official handover of five newly constructed classrooms, a project she says she personally lobbied for.
According to the vocal lawmaker, the move to bar her from entering the school was orchestrated by local authorities, including the area police boss, who she claimed allegedly instructed officers to block her.
Despite the restriction, the situation quickly escalated into a full-blown protest as residents gathered in large numbers outside the school compound.
Chanting and demanding her presence, the crowd expressed frustration over what they perceived as political interference in development initiatives meant to benefit learners.
Despite heavy police intimidation led by OCPD Mwea, who had instructions that I should not set foot in the school, Kadawa Primary School 5 classrooms complex, fully equipped with lockers and desks, and a tank for the learners drinking water is now officially open.

Videos and images shared online showed a large crowd marching towards the school gate alongside the legislator holding twigs and placards.
Defying the blockade, Maina addressed the crowd nearby and, with the backing of parents, proceeded to launch the classrooms, further criticising what she termed ‘intimidation’ by the local authorities.
“I shall not be intimidated in my duties, and I will launch every project I have lobbied for without fear. Any initiative is an initiative of the people, by the people and for the people,” said Maina.

The MP further accused unnamed leaders aligned with President William Ruto’s administration of attempting to hijack or delay the commissioning of projects for their own political gain.
Meanwhile, police maintained a heavy presence throughout the incident, though no major clashes were reported, with the motives behind the decision to block the MP remaining unclear.
As calm returned to the area, parents welcomed the completion of the classrooms, expressing hope that the tensions would not affect the learning environment for their children.
