EACC Arrests Another Ex-State Official Over Face Academic Certificates

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has charged a former Masinde Muliro University of Science and TechnologyΒ (MMUST) employeeΒ at the Kakamega Anti-Corruption Court.

She is held over allegations of forging academic certificates to secure public employment at the institution.

EACC established that the suspect allegedly forged a Diploma certificate in Community Health Nursing from Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), a Nursing Certificate from the Nursing Council, and a KCSE certificate from Matende Secondary School.

β€œA former employee of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has been charged before the Kakamega Anti-Corruption Court for allegedly forging academic certificates and using them to secure employment at the institution,” stated EACC.

The suspect was arrested and arraigned at the Kakamega Law Courts on 12th May 2026, where she faced multiple charges.

The charge sheet shows that the suspect faced multiple charges, stemming from forgery, uttering a false document, deceiving a principal and fraudulent acquisition of public property.

The sheet further outlines that the suspect’s alleged fraudulent earnings from the institution amounted to Ksh7,584,574, representing salaries and benefits received during her employment at MMUST between 2015 and 2023.

β€œBetween 1st January 2015 and 31st May 2023, within the Republic of Kenya, being a public officer employed by Masinde Muliro University of Science andΒ Technology asΒ a Nurse, you fraudulently acquired public property, to wit, Ksh7,584,574, being salary paid after securing employment using forged academic documents,” stated the charge sheet in part.

Upon completion of the investigations, EACC forwarded the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review and further direction on whether to prefer criminal charges against the suspect.

The accused denied all charges and was released on a cash bail of Ksh500,000 or a bond of Ksh1 million, with a surety of a similar amount, pending the hearing of the case in court, which continues as scheduled.

The matter will be mentioned on 28th May 2026 for pre-trial directions and to fix a hearing date at the Kakamega Anti-Corruption Court for further case management before the trial commences, as the prosecution prepares evidence briefs.

The case comes against the backdrop ofΒ Masinde Muliro University being flagged by the Ministry of Education for administering questionable courses.

ThisΒ promptedΒ investigations in a directive issued on April 1 by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba.

It also comes at a time when EACC is intensifying its crackdown on fake academic certificates.

Yesterday alone, the commission arresting two officials from theΒ Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) and another official fromΒ Kaimosi Friends University in Vihiga County.
