The Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) has announced plans to promote over 30,000 teachers before the end of 2026 as part of the government’s efforts to improve career progression within public service.
TSC’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Eveleen Mitei, announced this during a meeting with the National Assembly’s Education Committee at Bunge Towers on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
According to Mitei, the promotions will mainly depend on the number of teachers exiting service through retirement, resignation, or other processes.
She disclosed that the exercise is expected to commence once the National Treasury allocates Ksh2 billion for teacher promotions in the 2026/2027 Financial Year.

The committee, chaired by Tinderet Constituency MP Julius Melly, called on the TSC boss to hasten the process amid growing complaints from teachers over delays and regional disparities in promotions.
During the committee meeting, the lawmakers also demanded transparency and fairness in the implementation of several other teacher-related programmes nationwide.
At the same time, Mitei confirmed that 20,000 intern teachers out of the current 44,000 interns will be absorbed into permanent and pensionable terms in the 2026/2027 Financial Year.

During the session, legislators also raised concerns over the welfare of teachers, delays in compensation under the Work Injury Benefits Act (WIBA), and reports of school principals withholding teachers’ academic certificates.
In her response, Mitei admitted that although funds for WIBA compensation had been requested in the budget estimates, the allocation was not approved.
She also disclosed that over 100,000 teachers have been recruited in the last three years following additional support from President William Ruto.
