A rescue effort was initiated on Friday morning after a train crashed with a school bus transporting students on the Gilgil-Nyahururu road in Nakuru County.

The bus, owned by Teresia School, was apparently taking students to school when the accident occurred near a railway crossing in the Gilgil district.

According to preliminary reports, the train collided with the bus before pushing it a short distance, prompting fear among students and residents who hurried to the site.

Emergency responders, police officers, and members of the public were immediately on the scene to help with rescue attempts and provide medical care to those injured.

Fortunately, no fatalities were immediately reported following the incident, but reports indicated that some pupils sustained injuries and were attended to by medical personnel at the scene.

The police have since launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the collision, including whether the bus driver observed railway crossing safety procedures before attempting to cross the tracks.

The accident caused temporary traffic disruption along the busy Gilgil-Nyahururu road as rescue operations and clearance efforts continued.

Images and videos circulating online showed the damaged school bus near the railway crossing surrounded by concerned residents and security officers.

While train accidents are rare, this is not the first time an accident involving a train and a bus has been reported in Nakuru County.

In August last year, eight people died after a train rammed into a Kenya Pipeline company bus near the Morendat training and conference centre in Naivasha, Nakuru County.

A police report revealed that the tragic incident occurred as the KPC bus, which was ferrying employees from the MTCC after a morning shift, attempted to cross the railway line.

Moments after the accident, Kenya Railways Corporation issued a strong warning to members of the public, including motorists, urging them to be vigilant when approaching railway crossings.

“Motorists and the general public are advised to take caution when crossing the railway line at level crossings to avoid collision with approaching trains,” Kenya Railways cautioned.
