KISII: Violent Student Unrest Erupts Over Posted New Principal

Chaos broke out at Nyabisase Mixed Secondary School in Bobasi, Kisii County, after a student protest over the appointment of a new principal turned violent.

The enraged students attacked professors and set fire to a dormitory.

Police are investigating the event that occurred on Monday, July 6, as education and security officials assess the extent of the damage.

The school has been closed indefinitely, with students asked to leave while officials investigate the violence and destruction of property.

According to reports, pupils protested against a recently appointed principal who was transferred from Mochorwa Secondary School.

The situation quickly escalated, forcing school staff to retreat to safety after efforts to defuse the tension and restore order proved unsuccessful.

Videos shared online show students, some concealing their identities using masks, and teachers engaged in a confrontation, with stones thrown across the school compound.

The unrest turned further destructive when a group of students stormed a dormitory and set it on fire. 

Students later forced open the school gate and left the compound, maintaining that they would not accept the new administrator.

The new appointment by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) followed the retirement of the previous school head, who had served in the role for four years.

Kisii County Director of Education Philip Chirchir visited the school alongside security officers to assess the situation and coordinate the response.

Authorities ordered students to vacate the institution as investigations into the violence and destruction of property began.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns over student unrest and property destruction in schools across the country, especially in the aftermath of the fatal fire at Utumishi Girls Academy.

Police are expected to establish the circumstances behind the incident and identify those responsible for the damage.
