Former Kenyan NFL Star Deported From U.S. After Overstay, Criminal Conviction
The United States government has deported former Kenyan NFL player Daniel Adongo back to Kenya after authorities accused him of overstaying his visa and cited his criminal record.
According to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the 37-year-old was deported on June 20, 2026, after a Department of Justice immigration judge ordered his removal in March this year.
The Trump administration said Adongo’s visa expired in 2016, shortly after his NFL career ended in 2015.
However, he remained in the United States without valid immigration status.
“ICE Chicago removed a criminal illegal alien from Kenya and former Indianapolis Colts linebacker,” ICE said.
“Daniel Ogama Adongo, 37, overstayed his visa in 2016 after his NFL career ended in 2015. A Department of Justice immigration judge ordered him removed March 23, 2026, and ICE removed him June 20,” it added.
His deportation, however, was not solely linked to his visa overstay. According to US authorities, Adongo had also been involved in several encounters with law enforcement in Indiana over the years.

ICE said he had been arrested multiple times on allegations including felony intimidation, battery and disorderly conduct.
The agency further noted that Adongo was convicted of criminal mischief involving property damage in 2020 and sentenced to 364 days in jail.
According to ICE, his most recent criminal charges brought his case under the Laken Riley Act, a US federal law signed by President Donald Trump in January 2025 that expanded mandatory detention requirements for certain non-citizens accused of or charged with specified offences.
Following the ruling by the immigration judge, ICE carried out his deportation on June 20.
US authorities described Adongo as a threat to public safety, maintaining that immigration laws apply equally to all individuals regardless of their professional background.
“Those who violate immigration law are held equally accountable, including former professional athletes,” said Douglas Thompson, Assistant Field Office Director at ICE Chicago.
