Gachagua Reveals Reasons Behind Shortage Of Passport Books, Links Murkomen’s Trips
Democracy for Citizens (DCP) party leader Rigathi Gachagua, has attributed the shortage of passport books in the country to the diversion of e-Citizen funds.
The former Deputy President claimed to have received intelligence from the Department of Immigration Services (DIS) on why thousands of Kenyans are stuck waiting.
Gachagua was speaking from his Wamunyoro residence on August 6 while hosting the Subukia Constituency, Nakuru County delegation.
According to him, applicants who booked their passports early have gone for over four months without receiving them.
“I received intelligence from the Immigration Department Offices, that, for four months, they have not been able to print new passports due to an extreme shortage of passport books,” Gachagua stated.
He alleged that the shortage stems from a lack of passport books, since the money set aside for printing was diverted elsewhere.
Gachagua claimed the funds were instead used to bribe voters during the recently concluded Ol Kalou by-election.
“They told me that there is no money to print a single passport book because the money that comes in for e-Citizen was diverted to other things such as the Ol Kalou by-election,” Gachagua stated.
Gachagua did not stop there, turning his attention to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen over the same eCitizen cash.
The former DP claimed part of the money funded Murkomen’s helicopter trips as he angles for the Rift Valley Kingpin seat.

He went further, alleging that CS Murkomen wants to succeed President William Ruto as the region’s political heavyweight ahead of 2027 since his trips majorly target Rift Valley regions such as Kericho, Bomet, West Pokot, and his home turf, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
To back his claims, Gachagua dared journalists to visit the Immigration Department at Nyayo House and see the situation firsthand.
He also alleged that the few passport books still available had been reserved for a particular community to woo 2027 votes.
His remarks come at a time when many Kenyans have been venting online over unending passport delays despite applying months in advance.
Most affected applicants say they can no longer secure the 66-page or even the 50-page passport books at the immigration offices.
They have instead been left settling for the 34-page passport, a downgrade that has frustrated frequent travellers and job seekers alike.
