ACCIDENT UPDATE: University Issues Statement On Injured, Dead Students As Fresh Details Emerge
The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) has confirmed the deaths of two students following a road accident involving a bus that overturned along the Kisumu-Awasi Highway.
The university said the students’ families had been notified and were making arrangements to transfer the bodies to the morgue.
โWe remain deeply saddened by the loss of our two students in the tragic accident. Their parents have been informed and are making arrangements to collect the bodies for transfer to the nearest morgues,โ the university wrote.
According to TUMโs update, 15 students remain at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where they are continuing to receive care.
One of the injured students was transferred to Aga Khan Hospitalโs High Dependency Unit (HDU) for further treatment.
Another 14 students who had been admitted to Lisa Hospital have since been treated and discharged.
The bus was carrying students travelling to Kisumu County for the funeral of former TUM student leader Elvis โBeastโ Otieno when the accident occurred on Friday, August 7.
In new footage shared online, some students are seen hanging from the side of the bus moments before the crash.

Meanwhile, others sit on the roof and others extend their hands through the windows to interact with fellow mourners travelling in other vehicles to the funeral.
Preliminary accounts indicated that the vehicle lost control, left the road and overturned, causing multiple injuries among those on board.
Images and videos from the scene showed the 50-seater bus with extensive damage, particularly to its front section and windscreen.
The university has urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information and sharing graphic material related to the crash.
TUM has also called on members of the public to rely on official updates while respecting the privacy of the affected students and their families.
The latest update comes as the university community continues to mourn alongside the family and friends of Otieno, whose funeral service is being held on Saturday.
