Kalonzo Demands IG Kanja Disband Militia-Like Police Unit, Likens It With RSF

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused President William Ruto’s administration of using a police unit known as the Operation Support Unit (OSU) to target government critics.

Speaking in an interview on NTV on August 10, Kalonzo alleged that the unit works alongside militias and goons to intimidate and harass political opponents.

The former Vice President claimed the little-known unit has been used to target his supporters, particularly those who have remained in opposition politics.

“I have to tell you something. Did you know there’s a police unit called OSU, the Operation Support Unit, a unit that is working with the goons, the militias, to terrorise political opponents,” Kalonzo stated.

Kalonzo went ahead to liken the unit’s conduct to that of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary outfit accused of grave human rights violations during the Sudanese conflict.

According to him, some members of the unit have now been armed and are increasingly being deployed to silence political opponents in different parts of the country.

He further revealed that he had personally sheltered a nominated Makueni County Assembly member in his own home, protecting him from a squad of OSU officers.

The MCA in question, Urbanus Wambua, popularly known as Kanzala Kana, was wanted over an allegedly viral video containing incendiary remarks.

Reports indicate that Wambua’s remarks targeted leaders allied to President Ruto, sparking widespread condemnation and prompting police to move against him.

Wambua was arrested on August 6, as detectives investigated the circulating clip, which allegedly contained hate speech directed at pro-government politicians.

He was later released from Muthaiga Police Station after Kalonzo intervened on his behalf, with the MCA now said to be at DCI headquarters alongside his lawyers.

Kalonzo has since urged the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to move with speed and disband OSU, describing its operations as a real threat to the country’s stability.

“I can tell you for a fact, because I’ve been in government, and I want to encourage the Inspector General of Police to disband that thing very quickly,” Kalonzo said.
