Gachagua Reveals Fresh Info On Dr Mutiso Murder, Largely Implicates Murkomen
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made fresh damning allegations implicating the Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen over an alleged plot to release of police officers suspected to have been involved in the murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso.
Gachagua claimed that Murkomen had personally shielded the officers from arrest, allegedly instructing that they not be taken to face investigators over the killing.
The DCP Party leader was speaking during a Thanksgiving Church service in Kiambaa, Kiambu County.
According to the former deputy president, two suspects who had been tracked down and detained in different parts of the country were later released after phone calls linked to CS Murkomen.
“On Thursday, one officer was caught there in Thogoto. After CS Murkomen heard that news, he called and was released,” Gachagua stated.
“The other one was caught on the way to Mombasa. CS Mukomen called once again and was released.”
He claimed the releases occurred despite the two officers having been identified as persons of interest in the ongoing investigation into the doctor’s death.
Gachagua also alleged that investigators were considering attributing the killing to two young men whom he described as innocent.
He said that he received the information from sources within the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
“Now, yesterday, they wanted to blame two young men. One from a boda-boda and the other from a car,” stated Gachagua.
“Police Officers from DCI and the NIS looked for me and informed me of what they want to do, by falsely accusing innocent men of things they are not liable for.”
The former Deputy President also accused Murkomen of protecting a senior police officer whom he alleged was linked to a wider pattern of contract killings involving officers based at Kikuyu Police Station.
Gachagua further alleged that some officers based at the station had been available for hire by individuals seeking to eliminate rivals in business disputes or domestic conflicts, although he did not provide evidence to substantiate the claims.
Dr Mutiso, a clinical psychologist and mental health researcher, was shot dead in Nairobi on July 29 in an incident that investigators have described as a targeted attack.
Detectives have linked the killing to a long-running family dispute over a 20-acre parcel of land in Mlolongo, Machakos County, reportedly valued at Ksh1.5 billion.
Investigators also allege that the suspected hitmen were offered a combined Ksh1.5 million, with each officer allegedly promised Ksh500,000 to carry out the killing.
Gachagua has since called for the disbandment of the police station he alleges is connected to the killings.
He also urged the Inspector General of Police to account for the release of the officers and provide an update on the investigation.
Interestingly, a day earlier, DCI also traded an accusationtowards the former DP.
They alleged that Gachagua was in communication with two people implicated in the murder of mental health doctor Victoria Mutiso, including one of the main suspects.
