KNH Forced To Respond To Missing Bullet Removed From Teenager Shot In Gikomba
Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has revealed that a bullet recovered from a patient treated for a shooting in Gikomba days earlier was initially confiscated by the hospital in accordance with established medical procedures.
In a statement published on August 9, KNH refuted claims that the bullet had gone missing, saying it was retained and preserved as part of the relevant medical and evidentiary records.
Once the bullet was retrieved, the hospital says the item was carefully retained rather than discarded, since it forms part of both medical and evidentiary records.
“The bullet was recovered during the treatment of the patient at the hospital,” KNH stated.
“The hospital wishes to clarify that the bullet/projectile recovered during medical management was retained and preserved as part of the relevant medical and evidentiary records.”
Moreen Nduku, a mother of one from Pipeline estate, was shot dead by a police officer at Gikomba market.
Her family is now demanding justice for her death, which occurred on Friday at KNH after four days of treatment.
The bullet that killed Moreen passed through her body and struck 16-year-old Abdala Lihan, lodging in his leg. He was rushed to KNH, where doctors worked to remove the bullet.
The family of Lihan alleges that the bullet removed from Abdala’s leg has mysteriously disappeared, with reports indicating that the police officer involved was attached to Shauri Moyo Police Station.
KNH explained that in such circumstances, recovered items are always carefully preserved, given their importance to ongoing legal and forensic processes that immediately accompany the incident.

The hospital further clarified that the bullet was eventually handed over for further handling and forensic examination through the appropriate channels.
This step, according to KNH, followed standard protocol that hospitals across the country are expected to observe in similar cases.
“In accordance with established procedures, such recovered items are handed over further handling and forensic examination of information or records required through the appropriate channels,” KNH stated.
It was also established that by further parallel investigations by VOCAL Africa, officers linked to Shauri Moyo Police Station were milling around the KNH ward where Abdalla was receiving his treatment.
They were asking repeatedly when he would be taken to the theatre in an attempt to cover up.
Meanwhile, VOCAL Africa is also questioning why the Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (IPOA) has remained silent since the incident was first documented.
