4 Police Officers Nabbed Taking Bribes In Kericho

On Thursday, officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested four National Police Service officers who were caught collecting bribes along the busy Kericho-Sotik Road after the commission set a trap.

The main suspects were apprehended after being lured into a trap and actively collecting bribes from motorists.

The arrests were made by EACC officers at a notorious bribe collection spot in Litein town, where the officers used to target motorists for bribes.

According to EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi, the commission made the arrests after receiving numerous public complaints.

The officers allegedly disguised themselves as traffic officers in order to solicit bribes from unsuspecting motorists.

The EACC also stated that the corruption acts could be attributed to the widespread accidents that have occurred along the stretch, where many non-roadworthy vehicles are allowed to pass after paying bribes.

Two other officers were arrested by EACC detectives while transporting the other two officers from Litein Town to Nakuru.

The two officers from Kericho Police Station were apprehended on Kericho-Nakuru Road near the Kaisugu Tea Factory.

The four officers were taken to EACC’s South Rift Regional Offices in Nakuru, where they were processed.

The two were later released on bail pending the conclusion of the investigation into them.

The commission warned the public that bribery is a major form of corruption with serious consequences.

“Majority view bribery as petty corruption. Its implications are, however, gross as it compromises road safety to the extent of claiming lives,” EACC noted.

The Commission also stated that many accidents on Nairobi-Western routes are caused by noncompliance with established road safety regulations as a result of bribe payments.
